Description

The town is located in the valley of river Oka, where the Gernika estuary rises. Very close to this place we can find the UNESCO-declared Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve

Once in Gernika, we must make sure to visit the ‘Casa de Juntas’ with its symbolic tree – the place where basque people used to meet to decide about community issues –, the church of St. Mary, the Museum of Euskalerria and the Peace Park with the colossal sculptures by Eduardo Chillida and Henry Moore.

During the Civil War, in 1937 the town was completely destroyed by the German air forces sent by Hitler, which inspired Picasso’s most famous painting.
